The Industrial Hygienist assists plant management in preventing injuries and illnesses by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling chemical and physical hazards in the workplace. Activities which support or are aligned with these general functions include chemical and physical agent exposure assessment, ergonomic evaluations, hazard communication, administration of the respiratory protection, asbestos management, and hearing conservation programs and employee training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Administer of industrial hygiene program and conduct exposure assessments
o Evaluation of tasks and work environments, sample collection, equipment calibration and maintenance
o Manage sites Similar Exposure Groups and Job Exposure Profiles
o Development of sampling strategies and plans, analysis of collected data, comparison of results to recognized occupational exposure limits (OELs)
o Recommending controls for exposures which may exceed recognized or recommended OELs
o Record keeping, maintenance of the industrial hygiene database, and report preparation
• Administer of the hazard communication program
o Develop and update chemical lists for each work area
o Review and update the written hazard communication program
o Evaluate new and updated safety data sheets from suppliers for hazards and ensures SDS is uploaded into database
o Provide site guidance and training on chemical hazards and container labeling
• Administer of the respiratory protection program
o Evaluate respirator selection and specification
o Oversight of the respirator fit test records, cleaning requirements and maintenance program
o Coordinate training on the use of respirators
o Respond to employee concerns regarding respirator use
o Interface with the medical department to assure that employees are medically qualified to wear respirators
• Administer of the hearing conservation program
o Conduct noise surveys, perform personal noise dosimetry, analyze data, prepare reports, and recommend noise control measures
o Identify employees who should participate in the hearing conservation program
o Interface with the medical department to investigate possible threshold shifts and conduct new hire and periodic training for hearing protection
• Administer of asbestos management program
o Oversee asbestos management program (sample, evaluate analysis reports, evaluate remediation jobs, work with vendors/contractors, manage training needs)
o Address employee concerns related to asbestos containing materials (ACM)
o Coordinate testing of potential ACM at authorized laboratories.
o Complete all regulatory required notifications for ACM project work
o Coordinate and oversee ACM remediation projects conducted by certified contractors
o Maintain documentation of test results, removal practices and project work related to ACM
• Mange site ergonomic program
o Proactive evaluation of manual tasks for ergonomic hazards and recommend preventive measures for potential musculoskeletal injuries
o Evaluate employee concerns and provide feedback and recommendations for improvement
o Conduct ergronomic evaluations on industrial and office activities
o Lead the site’s cross functional ergonomic team
• Select, specify, and recommend personal protective equipment
o Conduct evaluation of major tasks performed in manufacturing, maintenance, and the QA laboratory
o Ensure Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), batch sheets and work instructions are accurate and consistent with PPE requirements
o Develop and evaluate PPE selection guides for specific work areas
o Evaluation of new products
o Train employees on appropriate PPE and usage
• Additional duties as assigned
Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in a science related field from an accredited school
• Minimum one year of experience in industrial hygiene
• Basic knowledge of federal safety regulations
• Experience and/or knowledge in asbestos related work
• Ability to take direction and work independently
• Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
• Ability to work successfully with internal and external customers in a professional manner
Considered a Plus:
• Master’s degree in safety related field
• Certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) through the American Board of Industrial Hygiene
• Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
• Asbestos Certifications
• Experience in a chemical manufacturing environment
Working Conditions:
• Able to work day shift Monday through Friday
• Able to work a flex 40 hour schedule based upon training and departmental needs
• Must be willing/able to work in a manufacturing environment.
• Must be able/willing to be exposed to inclement weather while moving throughout the plant during the work day as required.
• Ability to wear all required PPE, including but not limited to steel toe shoes, long sleeves and pants, hard hat, safety glasses and hearing protection
• Able to climb, wear fall protection, and lift up to 50 pounds
