Job Summary:

The Boiler Operator Development Program offers individuals with limited or no chemical industry or boiler operating experience the opportunity to learn, develop, progress, and promote through our comprehensive program.  We utilize a phased approach with pay increases along the way as the candidate-trainee attains new skills and advances through the program, all the while enjoying competitive Lubrizol benefits and wages.  This program enables the candidate-trainee to skill build and position his or herself for top salary hourly positions as a Licensed Boiler Operator upon completion of the program.

 

Phase 1 – Utilities Department Flex Operator / Cake Grinder

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Grind filter cake for slurry feed to WHRI.
  • Movement and staging of operating items / assets around the section.
  • General housekeeping and operating an industrial high pressure washer.
  • Resource for Boiler Room, Sewer and WHRI (duties as assigned).
  • Begin learning various roles and responsibilities within the department.
  • Safely operate and work with industrial equipment using the proper PPE and safety procedures.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

 

Phase 2 – Utilities Department Process Sewer Operator

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate process sewer treatment system.
  • Run tests, monitor conditions, and interpret results to optimize process sewer key parameters.
  • Use of chemicals to analyze and balance water systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Pack and unload drums and totes.
  • General housekeeping.
  • Ability to operate industrial high pressure washer.
  • Safely operate and work with industrial equipment using the proper PPE and safety procedures.
  • Any phase 1 duties as required by the shift.
  • After proficiency at the sewer has been achieved:
    • Begin training and accumulating target hours for natural gas fired steam boilers.
    • Begin training to operate a waste heat recovery incinerator.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
  • Eligible for increase at this stage of the program.

 

 

Phase 3 – Utilities Department Boiler Operator In Training

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend 4 week training session known as Operator In Training Class (onsite).
  • Execute formal training plan to operate natural gas fired steam boilers.
  • Execute formal training plan to operate a waste heat recovery incinerator.
  • Continue accruing required hours of supervised boiler operation/training.
  • Execute preparatory plan to gain knowledge required to pass the state test and attain boiler license upon completion of Phase 3 of the program.
  • Can successfully execute all job functions of Cake Grinder / Flex Operator and Sewer Operator and can co-pilot the WHRI and/or Boiler House to accrue necessary hours for certification.
  • Any phase 1 or 2 duties as required by the shift.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
  • Eligible for increase at this stage of the program.

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:                          

  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited school.
  • Ability to wear SCBA\Respirator.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (verbal/written).
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and problem solve.
  • Candidates must be able to follow Lubrizol department procedures and practices.
  • Ability to safely drive and operate various delivery vehicles, including fork lifts.
  • Ability to hear alarms and follow alarm procedures.
  • Basic math and reading/comprehension skills and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to be self-motivated without immediate supervision.
  • Flexibility with schedule and work duties.
  • Must be a team player who will also assist other department team members as needed.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task while delivering focused results.
  • Ability to pay attention to accuracy and detail is critical.
  • Follow-up skills and the ability of quick thinking in a dynamic environment are crucial to success.

Considered a Plus:

  • Previous tow motor experience.
  • Additional computer skills.
  • Working SAP knowledge and/or experience with control systems.
  • Understanding of hazardous materials and safety procedures (SDS, JSA’s, etc.)
  • Previous experience with digital control operating systems.
  • Previous experience with Hazardous Waste Handling.
  • Knowledge of chemistry and chemical hazards.
  • Previous experience in safety teams or industrial safety training.
  • Previous experience in manufacturing and/or chemical industry.

Working Conditions:

  • Will be subject to extended periods of climbing ladders and stairways, sitting, walking, standing, bending, stooping, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, moving and lifting up to 55 pounds.
  • Willing to work 12 hour shifts, overtime, and holidays as needed.
  • Maintain clean shaven appearance to allow for respirator usage.
