Senior Scientist, Chemical Design & Synthesis (CDS)

Summary of Responsibilities:

This role is a critical part of Lubrizol’s Chemical Design & Synthesis (CDS) organization, focused on inventing, designing, characterizing, and developing new molecules, with a specific emphasis on hyperdispersant chemistries for Paints & Coatings applications. The successful candidate will combine hands-on research expertise with leadership skills to guide a small technical team and ensure safe, efficient laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Innovation & Research

• Invent, design, and synthesize novel molecules and polymeric dispersants.
• Perform hands-on laboratory work, including synthesis, characterization, and testing.
• Develop structure–performance relationships to guide formulation and product development.
• Conduct independent synthetic research in a multidisciplinary environment.

Laboratory Leadership

• Lead and mentor a small team (1–3 junior chemists), fostering technical growth and collaboration.
• Oversee daily synthesis laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with Lubrizol’s HSES standards and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Champion safe operations in corporate technology labs at the Singapore site and maintain strong engagement with local HSES leadership.

Communication & Collaboration

• Document, interpret, and communicate experimental results to colleagues, sponsors, and customers.
• Collaborate effectively within a matrixed organization, working across global teams and business units.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Organic or Polymer Chemistry
• 5-10 years of industrial experience in chemical design, synthesis, and product development of organic and/or polymeric compounds
• Proven ability to lead small technical teams and deliver results through collaboration
• Background in controlled/living polymerization techniques preferred
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
• Strong communication abilities, with fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese
