Job Summary:

The Environmental Specialist reports directly to the sites HSES Manager and is responsible for providing strategic and tactical leadership in the development and implementation of the facility’s environmental management programs and initiatives. This may cross all environmental media (e.g., air, waste, water) which is produced at the Gastonia ,NC site.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure compliance with all existing and future applicable laws and regulations of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), and Lubrizol standards and policies.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of environmental programs and initiatives for the appropriate environmental media.
  • Partner with all levels of the plant to support the facility’s compliance programs, Responsible Care or other management systems, and facility and corporate goals.
  • Provide technical oversight and review for the appropriate environmental media.
  • Interface with government agencies and the public on environmental matters and requirements related to operations at the facility.
  • Prepare and assist with preparation of environmental permits, reports, forms, and other routine and non-routine submittals for the appropriate environmental media in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Coordinate required testing events with the appropriate operating area and execute as required per standard.
  • Lead site inspections and audits by governmental agencies and Lubrizol corporate and facility auditors for the appropriate environmental media.
  • Develop and recommend solutions to eliminate pollution and environmental hazards.
  • Design and implement effective employee training programs.
  • Implement spill prevention programs and hazardous waste regulations.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the HSES Manager

 

Required Skills, Experience and Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, environmental engineering or bachelor’s degree in environmental science or relevant field. In-lieu of technical degree, 7+ years of applicable experience working in industry will be considered.

  • Minimum of 1 year experience working in support of environmental programs in a chemical plant.​

  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft office suite

  • Strong organization skills

  • Strong technical skills

  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be a self-starter that can work independently and, in a team, environment.

  • Ability to work successfully with internal and external customers in a professional manner.

  • Knowledge of CAA, Title V, RCRA, DOT, SARA, RMP, CWA, SPCC, SWPPP, and other environmental requirements

 

Considered a Plus:

  • Master’s degree in engineering or environmental science from an accredited college or university
  • Experience in chemical batch processing
  • Experience implementing and using Environmental Management Information Systems (RC14001 or similar).
  • Knowledge and experience with industrial wastewater systems, including flocculation, filtration press operation and biological wastewater processing.
  • Experience working with NCDEQ on Compliance Programs
  • Minimum of 3+ years’ experience in environmental role within a chemical plant

 

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Must be willing/able to work in a plant environment.
  • Must be able/willing to be exposed to inclement weather while moving throughout the plant during the workday as required.
  • Ability to wear all required PPE, including but not limited to steel toe shoes, long sleeves and pants, hard hat, safety glasses and hearing protection
