Process Safety Engineer
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the development and progression of Process Safety related capital projects
- Collaborate with Production and Project Engineering
- Communicate with plant and corporate leadership to secure funds for execution.
- Work with technical and operations staff to identify and mitigate potential hazards of existing and new processes:
- General Hazards: flammability, environmental, over-pressurization
- Reactive Scenarios: decompositions, polymerizations, and runaways
- Facilitate Process Hazard Analyses and hazard assessments to identify potential process hazards
- Facilitate Layers of Protection Analyses to assess hazards and potential mitigations
- Participate in Ad Hoc Incident Investigations
- Work closely with the Pressure Safety Group to identify and correct potential venting and pressure relief concerns (Relief System/Vent Design)
- Perform Management of Change (MOC) reviews
- Assist in maintenance and revisions to the OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA Risk Management Programs (RMP) for the operating site
- Train new and existing employees on process hazard awareness
- Other duties as assigned
SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- B.S. in Chemical Engineering
- Basic Process Engineering skills (minimum of 3 years process or plant experience - as Production or Process Engineer)
- Ability to build relationships and to collaborate
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
- Ability to communicate effectively with persons at all levels of the organization
CONSIDERED A PLUS:
- Experience and/or training in facilitating Process Hazard Analyses, Layers of Protection Analyses, and Facility Siting Studies
- Knowledge of the following codes: NFPA 30 (Flammable Material), NFPA 77 (Static); Mechanical Integrity API and ASME
- Familiarity with Process Safety software (PHA Works, PHA Leader, PHA PRO)
- Familiarity with Dispersion Modeling Software (CHARM, PHAST, ALOHA)
- Fired Equipment / Burner Management System requirements
- Evaluation of materials of construction, hydraulics, and heat/material balances
- Undergraduate studies or certification in Process Safety
- Graduate degree in engineering
- Familiarity with common process equipment
