Our customized thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) provide biocompatibility, flexural endurance, strength, and processing versatility for tubing, catheters, and many other applications in the medical device industry.  The Applications Engineer will be expected to develop a deep understanding of these TPUs and their applications in medical devices. 


Lubrizol LifeSciences is currently hiring an Applications Engineer at our Brecksville, Ohio location. Our team is building a state of the art thermal processing lab and the individual will be responsible for the installation and qualification of a 28 ton lab scale injection molder, including all safety aspects and writing standard operating procedures.  The individual will be expected to be the local expert in injection molding of medical device components and assist in thermal extrusion processing.  Other responsibilities will include medical device prototype development, test method development, analyzing data, preparing test reports, managing the lab, and organizing samples.  Also provide technical solutions to new and existing medical device customers including making material suggestions, recommending processing and handling methods, troubleshooting product and processes, attending trial runs, and solving other technical issues.


What you will do:

Research & Development

  • Assist in planning and equipment installation for state of the art thermal processing lab. 
  • Prepare and maintain standard operating procedures for all lab processes. 
  • Proactively maintain a safe working environment:  ensure conformance to company safety rules and regulations, assist in improving safety and housekeeping.
  • Set-up and run experiments on the injection molder and small extrusion line.
  • Prepare samples and build prototype medical devices or components for internal and external testing. 
  • Perform bench tests including tensile tests, moisture transmission, viscosity, haze, and yellowness index.
  • Generate clear and concise written reports that describe the test samples, data collection, interpretations, and conclusions.
  • Troubleshoot and solve complex problems using a variety of resources including published literature, internal technical data, and internal experts.


Technical Solutions (Customer Facing)

  • Technical Sales Support:
    • Develop a broad understanding of thermoplastic polyurethanes, their processing methods, and their applications in medical devices.
    • Provide support for sales activities such as data/sample requests, customer trials, and technical meetings.
    • Communicate effectively with customers with a focus on understanding key customer needs and technical challenges.
  • Global Trend Analysis:
    • Document customer inquiries and technical service activities for use in global trending.
    • Participate in trend analysis of technical service interactions and proactively address important global topics.
    • Create technical customer-facing documentation to address common inquiries or application topics.

What you need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in polymer science, plastics engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or related degree.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with extrusion and injection molding of polymers.
  • Experience with at least some basic polymer analytic methods, e.g. mechanical testing, melt flow index, GPC, DSC, DMA, FTIR, and optical microscopy.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English. 
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and SharePoint.
  • Must be US Citizen or permanent resident.
  • Willingness to travel ~25%.


Preferred Experience

  • Experience with using polymers for medical devices.
  • Experience with extrusion and injection molding thermoplastic polyurethanes. 
  • Experience with additional thermal or solvent based processing techniques, e.g. 3D printing, solvent casting, dip coating, or electrospinning.
  • Experience using SAP.
  • CAD experience, e.g. SolidWorks.
  • Experience using mold flow software for optimizing injection molding.
  • Familiarity with ISO, and ASTM standards for medical device testing and development.
  • Experience with medical device packaging and sterilization testing.
