What You'll Do:

As a Formulation & Application Scientist, you'll be at the forefront of our innovation. You'll collaborate with a diverse group of passionate individuals to deliver sustainable solutions to advance mobility, improve wellbeing and enhance modern life. The Scientist will advance our fundamental understanding of our resins and polymer technology in support of Lubrizol’s Performance Coatings in the Industrial, wood and protective coatings market segment. This includes new product development and product modifications to improve coating performances to meet and exceed customer expectations while improving efficiency during manufacturing and application. This role will have the primary responsibility to drive new product development in both water and solvent-borne coatings to meet our global business and technical targets.

 

What We're Looking For:

  • Lead and/or support development of new resins and polymers for 1 and 2K, water and solvent-borne coatings for Wood, Concrete, Direct to Metal and Anti-Corrosion applications.
    • Accountable for the execution of medium and long-term projects to develop coatings polymers with unique and differentiated performance for various substrates.
    • Deliver project milestones focused on results against meeting customer’s timeline expectations.
    • Analyze and communicate test results, challenges, and opportunities to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Operate with safety at the forefront and actively participate in the department safety programs.
  • Work on development of in-house formulation and testing capabilities at the bench in collaboration with technicians in the lab and working with Senior Chemists.
  • Develop and apply structure-property relationship for resins, pigments, and additives.
  • Work as an active member of cross-functional team ensuring alignment of project definition with marketing.
  • Evaluate and test experimental polymers to provide results and recommendations to the development team.
  • Build strong relationship and collaboration with synthesis personnel for product development projects.
  • Support customer evaluations of Lubrizol’s polymers and formulations.

 

Skills That Make a Difference:

  • B.S./M.S./Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials/Polymer Science, or related field from an accredited college/university with a minimum 3+ years’ experience formulating and testing water and solvent-borne coatings.
  • Skills to develop and implement coatings characterization methods and to interpret results.
  • Experience in the use of statistical methods for design of experiments, data modeling, and analysis of results.
  • Fundamental understanding of one component (1K) and two component (2K) coatings technologies in both waterborne and solvent borne systems.
  • Ability to work independently and in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge of paint application equipment and techniques.
  • Experience supporting multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Self-starter, highly motivated toward achievements, results oriented and team player.
  • Ability to travel as needed to support the evaluations and commercialization of new products (est. 10%).

  • Advanced degree
  • Experience in Wood, Masonry, Protective, Industrial coatings market.
  • Experience in conducting electrochemical testing.
  • Experience in developing high throughput and automated test systems.
