Job Summary  

The Senior Project Engineer reports directly to the Operations Support Manager and is responsible for executing facilities, mechanical, process, and related projects throughout the site with goals to improve safety, increase efficiency, reduce costs and enhance security. The position is responsible for all stages of the project management / capital project process, including design and specification of equipment, project cost estimation and justification, construction management, and equipment startup. As a senior engineering role would increase the project scope and cost that this position would be accountable to manage. This position also supports daily operations with process troubleshooting, process safety management and implementation of improved systems and standards. 

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensures safe operations by observing all required Health, Safety, Environmental and Security (HSES) procedures during the project process
  • Ensures capital projects are completed within the defined parameters for safety, quality, schedule, and budget
  • Participates with the operations, engineering, and maintenance team to identify, prioritize, and execute plant improvement opportunities
  • Prepares and submits capital project documentation including scope documents, cost estimates, project schedules, and related documents
  • Determines equipment specifications, sizing, layout and utility requirements (with input from other internal or external resources as needed)
  • Creates, modifies and reviews engineering drawings for P&ID’s, mechanical systems, electrical systems, civil/structural designs, etc. (with input from other internal or external resources as needed)
  • Ensures process projects are managed using all of the relevant Process Safety Management elements, including Process Hazard Analysis, Management of Chance, Mechanical Integrity and 
  • Coordinates project reviews and design approvals with relevant stakeholders and gatekeepers
  • Submits requests for quotation for equipment purchases and construction services, based on project designs and requirements
  • Creates purchase requisitions for process equipment, construction services, etc.
  • Coordinates and supervises civil/structural, mechanical, electrical, and related contractors during project construction
  • Reviews construction progress and equipment installations to ensure compliance with design specifications
  • Develops equipment startup and checkout plans for various equipment types
  • Supports other plant and departmental initiatives as directed by management

Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, Structural or Chemical Engineering or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years of project engineering experience, including sizing and specifying various equipment types
  • At least 5 years of experience in construction or contractor management, field construction techniques, or related (must have spent time on a job site with contractors and crafts people)
  • Experience in a chemical manufacturing environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot mechanical, basic electrical, &/or chemical systems

 

Considered a Plus

  • Experience in a chemical manufacturing environment
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Professional Engineer License (PE)
  • Familiarity with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) and related PSM topics
  • Experience with SAP software (project management, purchasing, maintenance execution, or related)
  • Working knowledge of DeltaV control systems (or similar DCS)
