The Lubrizol Corporation is looking for a collaborative and influential Health and Safety Supervisor (H&S Supervisor) to join our Avon Lake manufacturing facility. The H&S Supervisor is responsible for providing technical, professional, and tactical support in the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the site's HSE&S systems to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and conformance to Lubrizol HSE&S policies and standards.The H&S Supervisor will be a key contributor in developing and improving upon a positive Safety Culture of Operational Excellence: Strong People, Strong Systems, Personal Accountability, Open Communication and Trust. The H&S Supervisor will be responsible for developing and managing the site Safety Coordinator(s) direct report(s).

This is a highly visible position requiring significant interaction with all levels of the facility and has the potential for development and advancement to the site HSE&S Manager role.


  • Foster and continuously improve upon the site's Safety culture that is responsive to the manufacturing environment and business needs through teamwork and personal responsibility/ownership.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the facility's HSE&S programs, instilling cultural values of Responsible Care and personal accountability for safety.
  • Monitor leading/lagging indicators, inform with management to proactively assist with gaps.
  • Provide support to site security and the Emergency Response Team.
  • Develop and implement programs, plans and procedures for meeting/exceeding Safety performance goals and implementation of the Company Safety Elements and Responsible Care Metrics.
  • Lead safety-incident investigations to find root-cause and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Work with appropriate groups in implementing management of change (MOC) processes such MOC reviews, new chemical review, and pre-startup safety reviews.
  • Coordinate the implementation of a site industrial hygiene program including job exposure assessments, employee monitoring and associated recordkeeping, reporting and follow-up to minimize or eliminate exposure risks.
  • Assist in the development of JSA's/JHA's, risk assessments and PPE assessments.
  • Assist in the preparation and submittal of regulatory reports including but not limited to SARA Tier- II Inventory, SARA TRI, Hazardous Waste, NPDES DMR and CAA reports.
  • Serve as the backup to the HSES Manager in administering the workers compensation program for the site, maintaining files and interacting with the Third-Party Administrator and medical service providers.
  • Perform HSES inspections; document audits and interact with employees on the production floor on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate Process Safety Management Programs including leading and participation in process hazard assessments (PHA's).
  • Lead the administration of the STEP (Safety Through Employee Participation) program
  • Manage the site’s use of the Lubrizol Career Essentials system
  • Train and develop direct reports, providing opportunity for their professional growth.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement the new hire orientation training program


Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Special Requirements:

  • BS in safety management, engineering, science or related HSES field from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 5 years HSE&S specialization and supervisory/management experience.
  • Strong working/technical knowledge of programs such as, but not limited to: OSHA Industry Standards, USEPA and OEPA environmental regulations (air, water, and waste), DOT, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, and Workman's Compensation.
  • Proven ability to lead incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Proven ability to lead the development/review of job safety analyses and process hazard assessments
  • Proven ability to effectively lead with minimal supervision.
  • Self-starter with a drive and desire to manage multiple projects from start to completion with effective results.
  • Strategic and creative thinker with a proven track record of learning from both successes and failures.
  • Ability to effectively work in a matrix organization.
  • Capacity to influence at all levels both inside and outside of the organization.
  • Strong PC skills, including MS Office software.
  • Ability and willingness to walk and climb stairs as needed and wear PPE daily within the site for audits and area inspections.


Considered a Plus:

  • Proven ability in supporting and improving upon a chemical manufacturing site's safety culture and safety performance.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross functional teams toward improvement targets.
  • Experience in Reliance ETQ Quality Management Software.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or in process to achieve certification.
  • Prior successful implementation of safety or environmental management systems such as RCMS, OSHAS 18000, ISO 14000.
  • Proven background in developing and presenting training programs.
  • Knowledge of batch and continuous chemical processing.
