Supervisor - Mechanical Engineering 

Location: Hazelwood, Derbyshire


This role is for a Supervisor - Mechanical Engineering within our R&D facility located in Hazelwood, Derbyshire. 


You will be part of a team responsible for the design, manufacture and support of mechanical systems and equipment within our vehicle engine and driveline testing facility. You will be based within the Mechanical Testing department but will also provide mechanical engineering support across the site within a chemical laboratory environment. You will supervise a team of Technicians who manufacture and assemble new test installations and maintain the testing infrastructure.


The candidate will provide supervision to the team and have the practical skills to undertake manufacturing / assembly / maintenance tasks as required in support of the team. You will manage the planning, allocation, and prioritisation of tasks ensuring specification, quality and schedule requirements are met. The candidate will also be able to work co-operatively within a larger support team.



 Key Accountabilities:

  • Act as the supervisor for a team of Mechanical Technicians, managing the day-to-day workload through planning, allocation, and prioritisation.
  • Provide technical direction, guidance and advice as required to deliver solutions.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to support individual career development and performance management.
  • Coordinate work requests in line with customer requirements, managing the associated purchasing and logistics demands.
  • Maintain a maintenance strategy to meet both department and site needs for mechanical integrity.
  • Issuing of permit to work for both internal personnel and for 3rd party contractors to control high risk activities, e.g., hot work, confined space entry etc.
  • Manage and maintain H&SE standards, risk assessments and competency registers.
  • Lead local improvement activity, define, and implement best practices


Required Skills / Knowledge / Expertise:

  • Experienced in a Mechanical Engineering environment with hands-on experience of maintenance, machining (including CNC), and fabrication advantageous.
  • Experience of supervising a team, managing workload and team/individual development
  • Knowledge of air handling, cooling water, fuel delivery and compressed air systems would be advantageous.
  • Understanding of technical drawings, manufacturing methods and techniques.
  • Experience of running a maintenance programme.
  • Competent in use of Microsoft Office
