Scientist – Hyperdispersants Research and Technology

Location: Blackley, Manchester

The Hyperdispersants R&T department supports Lubrizol through the invention and synthesis of new speciality-chemicals and technical support of existing products.


We are looking for a motivated Chemist to join our Lubrizol Advanced Materials based Process Technology team who will use their technical expertise to scale up and synthesise molecules, interpret and analyse analytical and performance data, and drive projects forward to meet evolving business needs.


This role is based at the coatings centre of excellence based in Blackley, 3 miles from Manchester city centre, UK however the role will require occasional travel to the Huddersfield manufacturing site. Occasional out of hours working may be required


Key Accountabilities:

  • Be part of a Process Technology team working on a variety of commercial projects.
  • Plan and Optimise processes and scale up to support commercialisation
  • Support our manufacturing facilities in Huddersfield and communicate with relevant teams on the plant to exchange information and results, which are required to assist in directing process development work
  • Prepare experimental programmes in consultation with plant personnel and HS&E experts and take part in appropriate on-plant supervision to permit the safe and effective trial of process modifications or scale-up studies on semi-technical or full-scale plant activities
  • Assist in preparation of reports, technical memoranda and appropriate sections of works process recordings to disseminate and record the results and conclusions of laboratory work programmes.
  • Support product development, product scale up, process capability improvements, and new raw material evaluation projects.
  • Prepare representative lab samples of new products to enable business/customer evaluation and support the dispatch of such samples to customers


The ideal candidate will have:

  • BSc/HND/HNC or equivalent in chemistry (or will complete by Summer 2022)
  • Industrial plant experience considered a plus
  • Ability drive to Manufacturing sites is essential, it would be beneficial to be able to flex time outside core hours in support of plant processes
  • Good communication, team working and interpersonal skills, to be successful in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Good project management skills, with experience of managing multiple projects to deadlines
  • Good IT skills (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Chemdraw or equivalent) a knowledge of SAP  is advantageous
