Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises pilot plant operations and pilot plant technicians to assist in product scale-up from lab to pilot to commercial-scale manufacturing in batch thermoplastic polyurethane  (TPU) reaction and melt compounding operations at Wilmington, MA and other manufacturing locations.
  • Provides hands-on assistance in pilot and lab-scale synthesis operations when needed.
  • Coordinates priorities, scheduling, and reporting of batch reaction, secondary processing, and melt compounding pilot line operation
  • Supervises, leads, and supports LifeScience TPU product development, product scale-up, process capability improvement, and new raw material evaluation projects.
  • Communicates with technical and non-technical members of group product development teams to understand project needs for successful scale-up and product realization.
  • Designs, executes, analyzes, and reports (both written and verbal) on multiple, simultaneous complex projects within pilot plant and commercial-scale manufacturing.
  • Applies and maintains systems associated with new chemical introduction, Responsible Care Management System, Management of Change, Process Safety Management, and production scale-up.
  • Assists Manufacturing Manager and Quality Assurance Improvement Manager to optimize current operations’ process capability, improve product quality, efficiency, and uptime by implementing statistical analysis, Design of Experiments (DOE), and improved control strategies.
  • Supports and leads manufacturing line troubleshooting and problem solving and applies technical expertise and statistical analysis to quickly and effectively resolve issues.
  • Designs processes, prepares engineering estimates, and coordinates capital projects on pilot plant equipment.
  • Complies with all applicable internal and external Lubrizol LifeScience Health, Safety and Environmental policies.
     

Required Education, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Chemical Engineering
  • Must have previous industrial or co-op experience in a chemical manufacturing environment
  • Must have knowledge of manufacturing of polymers or engineered resins
  • 2+ years of experience leading a team is a plus
  • Strong fundamental knowledge in chemical engineering principals with proven problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong project management skills utilizing stage-gate systems and job aids
  • Very strong “hands-on” mechanically and chemically oriented process-engineering skills.
  • Knowledge of unit operations and process/equipment calculations and design.
  • Knowledge of experimental design (DOE) and data analysis, using fundamental statistical techniques and statistical software.
  • Knowledge of medical device change management and manufacturing requirements and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) considered a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills. Ability to work with others at all levels of the organization in multiple sites globally.
  • Customer focused – responsive to the internal and external customers.
  • Creative thinker with a proven track record of learning from both successes and failures
  • Basic knowledge of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) polymerization manufacturing highly preferred
