Job Summary:

Reporting to the Wickliffe Site HSES Manager, the Safety Specialist spends most of their day addressing safety matters with an emphasis on areas related to process safety.  The Safety Specialist will, in coordination with the HSES Manager, provide guidance related to safety and process safety issues. This person will interact and work with the R&D, maintenance and engineering departments, and other internal clients, to provide technical support related to the development of practical solutions related to safety and process safety compliance, training, emergency management and recordkeeping.



  • Provides leadership, counsel and technical assistance to departments in the field of safety and process safety to achieve HSES goals
  • Facilitates, coordinates and/or participates in PHAs and process safety reviews
  • Reviews plans and P&IDs for site projects or processes
  • Oversees the Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) program
  • Develops and conducts safety and process safety training
  • Attends and participates in safety meetings and inspections
  • Participates in site emergency planning, drills and incident responses
  • Evaluates new chemicals for approval
  • Provides technical support to site management and R&D regarding safety and process safety regulations and Lubrizol standards
  • Prepares updates to site safety policies and programs
  • Maintains record keeping as required by regulations and company policy
  • Serves as a point of contact for internal and external audits and inspections
  • Performs duties related to site RC14001 Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) and VPP
  • Performs and/or assists with plant wide and departmental safety audits
  • Assists with corrective actions from internal/external audits, inspections, and visits
  • Leads/participates in process safety incident investigations and root cause analyses using techniques such as 5 Whys and Cause Map
  • Works with personnel to improve processes
  • Provides technical/professional support regarding applicable safety and process safety regulations, metrics and/or incident tracking
  • Assists with data collection and preparation of various reports
  • Participates on internal compliance auditing teams
  • Additional duties as assigned

    Skills, Experience, and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering
  • Minimum five years of experience in the chemical industry
  • Competent in basic computer skills
  • Solid communication skills both written and verbal
  • Previous PSM and HazMat experience preferred
  • Professional certification such as CSP preferred
    Working Conditions
  • Spends 50% or greater of work day in the field
  • Able to climb, wear fall protection, and lift to 50 pounds
  • Able to wear PPE including hard hats, hearing protection, respirators and safety shoes
