Job Summary: 

  • Reporting to the HSES Manager, the Safety Specialist primarily provides support to maintenance and construction activities through technical expertise and practical solutions related to safety, training, and compliance.



  • Identify, eliminate, and control hazardous conditions that may lead to injury and/or property damage using safety standards, best management practices, and analytical techniques
  • Develop and conduct contractor, maintenance, and new employee training
  • Review and vet all contractor questionnaires
  • Lead and participate in safety meetings, pre-bids, toolbox talks, etc.
  • Conduct daily inspections of construction and maintenance activities, and quarterly inspections of roofs and mechanical rooms
  • Evaluate chemicals related to construction activities
  • Issue confined space and hot work permits as needed
  • Participate in site emergency planning, drills, and incident responses
  • Provide technical support to campus personnel on regulations and Lubrizol standards
  • Update relevant site policies and programs
  • Maintain record keeping as required
  • Serve as a point of contact for internal and external audits and inspections
  • Perform or assist with site audits
  • Assist with corrective actions from internal and external audits, inspections, and visits
  • Lead or participate in near miss/incident investigations and root cause analyses
  • Prepare reports and presents data
  • Participate on internal and/or corporate sponsored compliance auditing teams (some travel may be required)
  • Additional duties as assigned


Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, science, or engineering or in place of a degree 10+ years of relevant experience
  •  2-5 years of safety experience
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA)
  • Competent computer skills
  • Sound communication skills both written and verbal
  • Professional certification preferred (e.g., CHST)
  • OSHA 30 card
  • Competent person in scaffolding, rigging, and lifting, aerial lifts (preferred)


Working Conditions:

  • Spends 50% or greater of workday in the field
  • Able to climb and lift 50 pounds
  • Able to wear PPE including hard hats, hearing protection, respirators, and safety shoes
