The Mechanical Testing (MT) Lab Operations Support Manager is responsible for the safety, building infrastructure, utility systems and shared services that support the work of our Test Engineering teams.  This role is accountable to ensure that all of the basic services and systems required to run the lab safely, effectively and efficiently are operating in an optimum fashion.  The Lab Operations Support Manager is also responsible for managing the Metrology, Rating, Safety, Parts Cleaning and Ordnance and Fuel Services teams.  Lab Operations Manager serves as the key liaison between Mechanical Testing/R&D and the Wickliffe Site Services team to coordinate building construction and maintenance work, shutdowns, utility needs and tie-ins.  Additionally, this role is responsible for managing the MT safety and operations risk register and risk analysis process.

Responsibilities

Ensure the quality and integrity of laboratory support functions and services provided by the Operations Team to the MT Technical Teams.

  • Manage portfolio of capital and maintenance projects related to Mechanical Testing building infrastructure and utility systems.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and propose and implement solutions to problems encountered with lab utility systems (process water, humidified air, fuel storage and distribution, process piping, HVAC, electrical, Fire/Life Safety systems).
  • Work with MT Management team to coordinate use of lab floorspace balancing needs for test demand, storage and organization, safety while maximizing value for LZA.
  • Provide leadership and direction for process improvement, preventive maintenance for lab systems, standardization initiatives and new technologies and other processes that will help improve lab efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Serve as key point of contact between Mechanical Testing and Wickliffe Site Services regarding the coordination of building and utility system maintenance work, capital projects and process improvements.  Develop plans for annual shutdown that balance needs for safety, operational effectiveness and test demand.
  • Conduct risk analysis of MT Operations and Safety and develop plans and implement actions to eliminate or mitigate risks.
  • Support practices and processes that ensure the laboratory support systems have the flexibility to support evolving business needs.
  • Provide regular, ongoing coaching via regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports.
  • Ensure team members follow corporate policies, cultural beliefs and ethical practices.
  • Empower employees and teams to make their own decisions.  Ensure they have the resources and authority needed to implement their decisions.
  • Recruit and maintain talent as dictated by business needs.

 

 

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Proven supervisory/management experience.
  • Project management and process engineering experience with building and utility systems and familiarity with relevant building, electrical, fire and safety codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate to a wide variety of audiences at all organizational levels.  Ability to multitask and delegate work as appropriate.

Decision Making

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining building and utility capital and maintenance budgets and working with Test Cell Engineering and Maintenance team, Wickliffe Site Services and external contractors to successfully execute projects. 
  • Assessing and analyzing risks to safety and operation and developing plans to mitigate these risks.
  • Determine and recommend appropriate level of involvement and action needed in employee issues.

  • Flexible with work schedule and willing to accept calls 24/7.

  • May require occasional domestic or international travel.
