Job Summary:

The Industrial Hygiene Specialist assists in the prevention of injuries and illnesses by working with the safety team to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control chemical and physical hazards in the workplace.  Activities which support or are aligned with these general functions include chemical and physical agent exposure assessment, ergonomic evaluations, hazard communication, respiratory protection, asbestos management, hearing conservation and employee training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct exposure assessments
    • Assist with the evaluation of tasks and work environments, develop sampling strategies, sample collection, analysis of data, comparison of results to recognized occupational exposure limits (OELs) and recommending controls for exposures which may exceed recognized or recommended OELs
    • Recordkeeping, packaging and shipping of samples, equipment calibration and maintenance, maintenance of the industrial hygiene database and report preparation
  • Assist with the hazard communication program
    • Developing and updating lists of chemicals for each work area
    • Updating the written hazard communication program
    • Evaluating safety data sheets from suppliers for hazards, scanning and uploading supplier SDSs and SDSs for non-coded materials into the database
    • Providing guidance on labeling to production and maintenance
    • Training new employees on chemical hazards and container labeling requirements.
  • Assist with the respiratory protection program
    • Evaluating respirator selection and specification
    • Respirator cleaning and maintenance program
    • Training on the use of respirators
    • Maintenance of fit test records
    • Responding to employee concerns regarding respirator use
    • Interfacing with the medical department to assure that employees are medically qualified to wear respirators
  • Assist with the hearing conservation program
    • Conducting noise surveys, performing personal noise dosimetry, analyzing data, recommending noise control measures, and preparing reports
    • Identifying employees who should participate in the hearing conservation program
    • Recommending placement of signage, interfacing with the medical department to investigate possible work-related hearing losses and conducting new hire and periodic training for hearing protection
  • Assist with the asbestos management program
    • Addressing employee concerns related to asbestos containing materials (ACM)
    • Coordinating testing of potential ACM at authorized laboratories.
    • Completing all regulatory required notifications for ACM project work
    • Assist with coordinating the ACM remediation projects conducted by certified contractors
    • Evaluating results and maintaining documentation of test results, removal practices and project work related to ACM
  • Assist with ergonomic evaluations
    • Evaluating manual tasks for ergonomic hazards and recommending preventive measures for potential musculoskeletal injuries
    • Evaluating employee concerns and providing feedback and recommendations for improvement
    • Conducting evaluations of computer workstations and ergonomic awareness training
  • Assist with the selection, specification, and recommendation of personal protective equipment by:
    • Assisting in the evaluation of major tasks in production, maintenance, and the QA laboratory
    • Ensuring Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), batch sheets and work instructions are accurate and consistent with PPE requirements
    • Helping to develop and evaluate PPE selection guides for specific work areas
    • Assisting in the evaluation of new products
  • Additional duties as assigned

 

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:    

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene or related field
  • 3+ years’ experience in industrial hygiene or safety
  • Basic knowledge of federal safety regulations
  • Ability to take direction and work independently
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to work successfully with internal and external customers in a professional manner

Working Conditions

  • Able to work day shift Monday through Friday
  • Able to climb, wear fall protection, and lift up to 50 pounds

     

Considered a Plus

  • Certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) through the American Board of Industrial Hygiene
  • Experience and/or knowledge in asbestos related work
  • Experience and/or knowledge in ergonomic related work
  • Experience in a chemical manufacturing environment
