The Data Acquisition and Control (DAC) Engineer interacts closely with Test Engineers and operations to understand product approval and differentiation needs and ensure that Mechanical Testing DAC Systems are effectively and efficiently deployed to support the needs of business partners.  This includes providing engineering support to the lab operating team, coordination of work from internal and external service groups, new test development.  The job includes project work, building new data acquisition and control systems and support of existing systems.




DAC Engineering and Project Support

  • Develop and troubleshoot test procedure scripts in collaboration with test engineers
  • Support final integration and shakedown of new test stands, including tuning and operations verification
  • Provide project support by scoping, designing, and quoting automation systems that meet testing requirements and comply with existing DAC standards and practices, safety codes, and budgetary limitations.
  • Review testing automation designs and specifications for components being purchased or fabricated.  
  • Maintain and enhance internally developed, proprietary automation software
  • Provide advanced automation system troubleshooting and support, working with test engineers and operations and instrument technicians
  • Monitor installation and operation of testing automation equipment and systems to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety codes, and work to identify improvements to the equipment and associated support processes.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of DAC hardware standards.
  • Interact with test engineering, along with business partners and commercial teams, to develop automation strategies and technologies that best support business growth objectives and evolving Testing requirements.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of data acquisition and control for lubricant product development and product differentiation.
  • Maintain and specify computer hardware to support Testing automation
  • Train engineers and technicians on automation systems and control concepts
  • Work with instrument technicians and technical specialists to outline maintenance procedures and engineering documentation for automation systems and equipment to ensure maximum service life and utilization. 


Support Division and MT Department Goals

  • Track relevant Division and Department and groups goals and the progress against them.
  • Support processes that ensure operating flexibility in response to customer needs.
  • Utilize and actively participate in continuous improvement processes and initiatives, such as LEAN and problem-solving methodologies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.
  • Collaborate with laboratory operations, test engineers, maintenance and other resources to ensure optimum test performance.
  • Partner across technology groups and testing division, striving for consistency in processes and resource sharing when practical.
  • Actively support safety initiatives such as RCMS (Responsible Care Management System) and OSHA VPP (Voluntary Protection Program).  Support all Lubrizol and department initiatives around Safety, ISO 9000 and ISO 17025 certification and career development.

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications

  • BS or MS Degree in Electrical, related engineering, or Computer Science preferred.
  • 5+ years’ experience working with automation/integration/control systems
  • Experience with control panel design and layout, instrumentation schematics
  • Effectively communicate (written and oral) with colleagues and internal/external customers.
  • Able to conduct data analysis and provide conclusions and/or recommendations for improvement in the test area.
  • Highly Desired Experience:
    • Proficiency in programming C# / WPF or similar language or experience
    • Utilizing CAN for advanced vehicle hardware control, communications, and troubleshooting for OEM applications
    • Programming communications with various instruments using different protocols (Modbus, RS232, TCP-IP, etc.)
  • Beneficial Experience:
    • LabVIEW Real-Time Programming experience
    • Microsoft Azure, SQL
    • Design custom electronics, and layout PCB's
    • Programming Motor Drive PLC's
    • Data Processing and Analysis

  • Be able to conduct data analysis and provide conclusions and/or recommendations for improvement in the test area.  Provide clear, concise and timely reports reviewing the pertinent details, status and results.
  • Keep management aware of all information and issues associated with their work.
  • Manage test area in a financially responsible manner by balancing expenses against revenues and by determining return on investments.
