Corrosion Engineering Co-Op

Are you looking for a co-op position through which you will gain experience in a fun and productive work environment alongside peers? The Lubrizol Corporation’s cooperative education program is designed to prepare students for their chosen profession through experiential learning.

As a Lubrizol Corrosion Chemistry co-op student you will rotate through a number of different assignments based on individual interests and business needs of the Company.  Lubrizol believes in providing a wide variety of experiences and expanding responsibilities as you progresses through the program.

The typical rotation takes place in Wickliffe (corporate headquarters, research and operations).  It offers the following core assignments to ensure you are exposed to traditional chemical engineering roles.

Synthesis

You will work side by side with research chemist who will synthesize a wide variety of chemicals for the metal working industry. You will run the reactions, charge the raw materials, and perform whatever tasks are necessary to help us learn about and optimize our chemical processes. This is a great starting session to familiarize students with the basic chemistry, basic chemical engineering unit operations, and Lubrizol work processes. Interactions with the Painesville, OH plant and potentially other manufacturing sites would be expected. This assignment provides a strong base of knowledge for jump-starting future assignments.

Product Development

You will be responsible for helping solve various technical problems encountered within a product line. You will work on projects involved with new process and product development.  You will work closely with a research chemist and learn how metalworking products are put together from inception to production.  Projects may involve the streamlining of product processes and working with plant engineers to insure the process can be implemented in the plant.

Evaluation and Testing

You will have the opportunity work with the individuals in the Metalworking Technical Service Laboratory and the research chemists developing products to evaluate prototype and existing rust preventative products.  Your duties will include designing and conducting the necessary set of experiments, determining the appropriate analytical tests, analyzing the experimental data and proposing the optimal solution. Assignments will challenge you in an effort to promote professional growth while being an integral part of the company’s business.

Lubrizol’s commitment to providing a rewarding experience for you will certainly pay dividends in your career development. New rotational opportunities are being added for experience in our pilot plants in Avon Lake, Ohio and Brecksville, Ohio.

Optional Assignments

You play a big role in carving out your co-op path at Lubrizol. If you have more than three work terms, a number of other assignments will be available to further expand your experiences.  For example:

  • Environmental Engineering:   You will help the plant manage its waste safely and efficiently by assembling data on air and water quality for government reports, by tracking the disposal of waste and by computer simulation of the environmental impact of chemical releases.

  • Asset Services:   You will learn the critical roles that mechanical and automation support play in all processes. This assignment may involve working with instrumentation, configuring control systems, troubleshooting and improving upon the designs of process equipment, working with the craftsmen, and gaining invaluable hands-on experience with chemical processing equipment.

What will you gain from this opportunity?

  • Unparalleled experiential learning.
  • Enhanced presentation, professional communication, and analytical skills.
  • Broad understanding of the Company, its capabilities, and objectives.
  • Work in a comfortable environment with peer students and resident experts.
  • Exposure to employees and leaders of various functions across Lubrizol.
