Corrosion Engineering Co-Op

Job Description

Are you looking for a co-op position through which you will gain experience in a fun and productive work environment alongside peers? The Lubrizol Corporation’s cooperative education program is designed to prepare students for their chosen profession through experiential learning.

As a Lubrizol Corrosion Engineering co-op student you will rotate through several different assignments based on individual interests and business needs of the Company.  Lubrizol believes in providing a wide variety of experiences and expanding responsibilities as you progresses through the program.

The typical rotation takes place in Wickliffe (corporate headquarters, research and operations within the Metalworking Group).  The typical co-op student can complete up to 5 terms with most students returning for 3-5 terms. This co-op opportunity will expose the student to a number of industry recognized corrosion tests as well as industrial chemistry and new product development.

Term 1

Evaluation and Testing

You will have the opportunity work with the individuals in the Metalworking Technical Service Laboratory and the chemists developing products to evaluate prototype and existing rust preventative products.  Your first term is where you build a solid foundation of understanding for common rust preventive tests.  The tests include ASTM, IP, DIN, military specifications, and internal methods.  This foundation is key to success in subsequent terms as the student is expected to run projects with a development chemist including project planning, product blending, and testing. Your duties will include designing and conducting the necessary set of experiments, determining the appropriate analytical tests, analyzing the experimental data and proposing the optimal solution. Assignments will challenge you to promote professional growth while being an integral part of the company’s business.

Lubrizol’s commitment to providing a rewarding experience for you will certainly pay dividends in your career development.

Terms 2-5 (responsibilities vary based on business and project needs)

Product Development

You will be responsible for helping solve various technical problems encountered within a product line. You will work on projects involved with new process and product development.  You will work closely with a product development chemist and learn how metalworking products are put together from inception to production.  Projects may involve the streamlining of product processes and working with plant engineers to ensure the process can be implemented in the plant.

Plant Support

You will have the opportunity to qualify new raw materials for existing products, work on manufacturing process improvements which typically include new blend or reaction procedures.  Depending on the business needs or product development project you will have the opportunity to work with our onsite pilot plant or local and global manufacturing plants.

You will work side by side with product development chemist who will synthesize a wide variety of chemicals for the metalworking industry. You will run the reactions, charge the raw materials, and perform whatever tasks are necessary to help us learn about and optimize our chemical processes. This is a great starting session to familiarize students with the basic chemistry, basic chemical engineering unit operations, and Lubrizol work processes. Interactions with the Painesville, OH plant and potentially other manufacturing sites would be expected. This assignment provides a strong base of knowledge for jump-starting future assignments.
