The purpose of the Lab Shift Chemist is to assist the Quality Manager in developing and coordinating testing to support the processes at the Pedricktown site.  This includes instrumentation support and calibration. The Shift Chemist works as a shift lab technician with additional responsibilities to maintain the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.

 

Essential Duties:

  1. Must acquire and maintain the same certification as a laboratory technician.
  2. Promote and follow plant policies regarding safe work practices by preventing personal injury, conserving the environment, and protecting Lubrizol property. 
  3. Introduce (and train), operate, and troubleshoot on all instrumentation.  Provide technician training on all advanced instrumentation.  Ensure that operational (and efficiency) capabilities are fully understood and utilization of instruments is maximized by laboratory staff.  
  4. Provide and document training to all laboratory staff on procedures and process changes.
  5. Ensure that calibrations are performed as scheduled and that all supportive documentation is accurate and in place.  Perform maintenance and repairs to the laboratory instrumentation.  This is in addition to more regular preventative maintenance performed by technicians.
  6. Make procedural recommendations designed to improve precision, accuracy, and safety.   This includes writing and modifying SOPs for instruments.
  7. Understand plant workflow and anticipate and prioritize lab tasks properly.
  8. Develop a central understanding of SAP, share that knowledge, and utilize SAP skills to improve efficiency. 
  9. Provide and document training to all laboratory staff on procedures and process changes.
  10. Openly communicate technical information, both written and verbally.  Proactively gathers and distributes information beyond the needs of current applications.
  11. Assist Lab Technicians in integrating new products into the laboratory, specifically regarding new analytical methods and assessing capability.
  12. Ability to work 12-hour rotating shift work 
  13. Functions as a backup to the Quality Manager
  14. Other duties as assigned by the manager

 

Qualifications:

 

Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Science degree

Knowledge of safe lab practices, lab techniques, and quality management principles

5 + years experience in a chemical or process industry, plant analytical laboratory, or R&D environment.

 

Knowledge of Basic understanding of analytical techniques, statistical techniques, and Quality Philosophies.

Familiar with ISO 9001 systems and procedures.  cGMP experience is a plus.

Ability to communicate clearly and listen attentively at all levels with internal and external parties.

Must have a strong work ethic, professional attitude, safe work practices, reliability, and be detail-oriented

IT Skills; use of SAP; Proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)

Ability to operate equipment in the area: gas & liquid chromatography, pH meters, analytical balances, Spectrophotometer, FTIR, Viscometer, Colorimeter, Particle Size Analyzer general laboratory supplies, housekeeping equipment, and safety equipment.

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of a specialized or technical field such as chemical or polymer
  • Previous experience with gas and liquid chromatography and other analytical testing equipment and software
  • Experience with SAP

 

 

The Pedricktown Lubrizol site is located in rural Oldmans Township, NJ.  Pedricktown is a very quaint, rural town where locally you can find the Cowtown Rodeo, which is known as “The oldest weekly running rodeo in the USA.” Although it is rural, it is close to many major cities and attractions. Philadelphia, the birthplace of our nation, is only 30 minutes away - home to the Constitution Center, Liberty Bell, and the world-renowned Art Museum where the famous scene from Rocky was shot on the museum steps.  Philly is also home to many first-class hospitals and top-tier colleges & universities.  It is also known for its bustling night life and restaurants. Philadelphia was named #3 on the “NY Times 52 Places To Go in 2015” list. New York is about 2 hours from Pedricktown – you can either drive there or get there easily by train.  New York is widely known for its first-run plays on Broadway, as well as Times Square.  Pedricktown is also conveniently located about 90 minutes from Baltimore, MD and 20 minutes from Delaware, which is home to the newly-renovated Wilmington Riverfront. In addition to city attractions, we are located about 2-1/2 hours from the Pocono Mountains, which is a great place to ski and snowboard, and less than 2 hours from the Atlantic Ocean with its beautiful white-sand beaches and Atlantic City with its numerous casinos.
