The Quality Manager provides leadership in quality initiatives, primarily supporting the Personal Home & Health Care business segment. This position directs the quality control laboratory and all related activities and staff. Additionally, this position provides guidance in interpretation and leads implementation of quality management systems to ensure product conformance, customer satisfaction, continuous improvement, and as applicable, compliance to appropriate standards.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads and exemplifies a culture where “safety is a core value” is a true belief and ensure safety accountability across the organization.
  • Maintains quality management systems and all relevant documentation including current ICH Q7 and EFfCl good manufacturing practices (GMP), and ISO9001 as appropriate for the product and business segment. Approves all quality-related documentation including procedures, specifications, master batch records and management of change (MOC).
  • Manages systems, procedures, and methods for verification, testing and disposition of raw materials, intermediates, packaging, labeling materials and finished goods. Manages requalification and retesting of products as appropriate.
  • Ensures effective systems are used for maintaining and calibrating critical equipment.
  • Reviews completed batch production and laboratory control records of critical process steps before release of product for distribution.
  • Performs product quality reviews. Ensures there are stability data to support retest or expiry dates and storage conditions where appropriate.
  • Develops and implements quality training for technicians and staff, including Q7 GMP for API manufacturing and agency inspection readiness. Establishes expectations and coaches, mentors, monitors performance, and provides feedback on performance of the laboratory staff.
  • Provides leadership regarding project prioritization, qualifications, validations, continuous improvement activities and appropriate metrics.
  • Reviews and approves qualification and validation protocols and reports.
  • Approves intermediate and API contract manufacturers and/or quality critical service providers
  • Leads quality and process improvements to leverage understanding of industry. Models best practices and connects with key stakeholders to gain support for continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Interfaces with supplier quality representatives concerning quality deviations and monitors the effectiveness of corrective actions.
  • Manages the budget for the quality control laboratory.
  • Ensures that department objectives align and support strategic plant and corporate metrics.
  • Recommends and justifies capital purchases of laboratory equipment necessary to improve data reliability and integrity.
  • Establishes processes to facilitate agency, customer and internal audits.
  • Develops appropriate product dispositions for nonconforming material.
  • Ensures critical deviations and quality-related complaints are investigated, resolved and appropriately communicated.
  • Coordinates surfactant sample program.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology or a related scientific or technical field
  • At least 5 years’ quality control laboratory experience (or equivalent) in a manufacturing environment, including experience leading others
  • Possess a technical understanding of quality control tests and their relationship to the manufacturing process, specifications and/or customer processes and applications
  • Proven quality management experience and continuous improvement skills
  • Practical knowledge of safe laboratory practice and techniques.
  • Good organizational skills, verbal/written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong MS Office products knowledge and skills
  • Statistical analysis


Considered a Plus

  • Experience in manufacturing and quality of regulated products (i.e. pharma, medical devices or food) highly preferred
  • ASQ or similar industry organization certification
  • ETQ Reliance or comparable compliance software
  • Statgraphics software or similar statistical software
  • SAP experience
