Process Safety Manager

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and continuously improve site-wide Process Safety Management programs:
    • Primary responsibility for the integrity and governance of Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Pre Start-up Safety Review (PSSR) and Management of Change (MOC) elements
    • Collaborate with and support Plant Leadership Team to drive overall program maturity   
  • Manage Process Safety Engineer
  • Act as backup to lead PHA’s when staffing and/or workload require additional resources.  
  • Implement Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) program to improve site risk assessment programs.
  • Lead Facility Siting studies and drive site alignment on the resulting action plan.  Incorporate input from global insurance provider
  • Work with the Process Safety Engineer and other site owners to maintain and update process safety information including:  PSM procedures, P&IDs, PSV sizing documents, and Process Flow Diagrams
  • Single site contact to manage the Corporate Risk Register; Ensure leadership sign-offs are in place
  • Lead or participate in process safety audits and maturity model assessments for the Painesville Plant and other sites as requested.  Support interpretation of audit/assessment results, development of priorities and action plans
  • Lead or participate in incident investigations deploying appropriate root cause analysis tools  
  • Lead classification of process safety incidents into appropriate tiers
  • Keep abreast of industry-wide regulations that are under development that could impact the site.  Ensure the plant is proactive in its preparation for regulation changes
  • Support RMP plan revalidation efforts led by HSES Team
  • Provide input to site capital investment plans
  • Plan and manage the Process Safety Cost Center operating expenses
  • Team Memberships include:  Plant Management Committee, Plant Management Safety Committee, HSES Corrective Action Advisory Committee and Global Process Safety Team
  • Support Manufacturing and Operations Support Teams to discern needed safety improvements based on PHAs, incidents, and MOC reviews
  • Support Maintenance and Project Engineering departments with particular focus on documentation requirements, mechanical integrity, project PHAs, and assistance with the establishment of site design or maintenance standards
  • Work on regional/global process safety standards and projects as assigned.  This could include leadership responsibilities, team membership, or site implementation lead/participant
  • Assist with Process Safety related training for new and experienced employees
  • Network with process safety professionals internal and external to Lubrizol

Skills, Qualifications, Experience:                                

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering
  • Minimum of 15 years experience working in a manufacturing environment. Chemical industry experience is preferred.  Minimum of 5 years experience in the process safety field
  • Knowledge of Chemical Unit Operations
  • Knowledge of PSM regulatory requirements and risk-based process safety best practices
  • Knowledge and application of Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) for assessing project and process risk 
  • Knowledge and application of Facility Siting studies required by PSM regulations
  • Understanding of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) analysis
  • Formal training and application of root cause analysis (cause mapping, fishbone, 5-Why, etc)
  • Team player that is able to work with a wide variety of people in different roles to reach workable solutions to safety hazards and processes/procedures
  • Good presentation and communication skills; able to promote ideas within the plant and across the global organization
  • Interpersonal skills (personal rapport and motivation) to effectively coach internal staff and work with outside groups and agencies engaged in process safety
  • Able to influence others to ensure compliance with PSM and implementation of safety inititatives
  • Ability to interact with the Corporate Process Safety Department to contribute to initiatives and to comply with corporate guidance and standards

Considered A Plus:                               

  • Working knowledge of ASME, NEC, NFPA, API standards and OSHA regulations
  • Experience in Dust Hazard Analysis and some understanding of solids handling regulations
  • Experience with PHA Works, Leader or other PHA software
  • Experience using SAP, PI and/or DeltaV software
  • Experience with Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
  • Professional Engineer Certification

Working Conditions:                             

  • Work is performed in a controlled environment; noise levels in some areas require hearing protection
  • Willing/able to work in plant (inclement weather) as required
  • Ability to wear PPE as required
  • Ability to climb steps
