The Process Control Engineer is responsible for scoping, estimating, implementing, and commissioning support for capital projects.  The Process Control Engineer provides the leadership, guidance and direction in the development of process control strategies, system configuration, instrumentation, and engineering standards to meet or exceed Lubrizol’s business and safety objectives.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for operating instructions, new product introductions, and process optimization and improvements.
  • Provides support for commissioning and start-up of capital projects and new product introduction.
  • Provides technical training/communication for operations new product start-ups, product chemistry, process changes and problem resolution to plant personnel.
  • Determines the instrument and process control needs of the project.  Evaluates requirements for the instrumentation and controls resources to complete the project by the desired startup date.  Completes the project scope and cost estimate.
  • Updates project P&IDs and provides the red0marked P&ID to the Project Manager showing the scope of the instrumentation and controls portion of the project.  Reviews with Project Manager and Operations and establishes project P&IDs.  
  • Assesses DeltaV and other control system hardware and licensing needs for the project. If additional hardware or licensing is required, generates RFQ’s and procures.
  • Completes the control system configuration, graphics, and simulation.  If required, arranges for additional resources to support the control system configuration and related work.
  • Coordinates instrument construction, commissioning and checkout with the instrument construction resources.
  • Regularly reports the overall I&C status to the Project Manager and Operations.  
  • Supports, develops and follows the facility standards and procedures that have been established, such as engineering standards, configuration standards and work procedures.
  • Coordinates with internal instrument engineering, design, and instrument CAD resources to complete the instrument construction package.  If required, arranges for external resources to support the work. 
  • Reviews and approve the I&C construction package deliverables, including P&IDs, instrument lists, interconnections, schematics, location plans, loop sheets, cable schedule, process control and automation requirements, configuration design requirements, and special instructions.
  • Identifies and troubleshoots process concerns and implements changes to correct chronic issues
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.


Skills, Experience, and Qualifications                           

  • BS degree in Engineering from an accredited university. Chemical Engineering is preferred.
  • At least 7 years’ relevant experience in a chemical manufacturing plant
  • Experience with batch control
  •  Sound project management skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills
  • Experience working with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and/or similar programs
     

Considered a Plus

  • Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering
  • Good mechanical aptitude
  • Experience using SAP, PI and/or DeltaV software highly preferred
     

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office work; occasional field work
  • Work is performed within a controlled environment; noise levels in some areas require hearing protection
  • Willing/able to work in plant (inclement weather) as required
  • Ability to climb steps
  • Willing/able to work off hours/weekends, as required
  • Ability to wear PPE as required
