By working in close collaboration with Product & Marketing, the Director of Strategic Research and Innovation is accountable for delivering market driven innovation. The right individual is a hands on dynamic leader who overlooks planning and execution of new technology platforms and the development of a robust intellectual property pipeline for sustainable growth. The Director of Strategic Research and Innovation is CPI’s technology spokesperson in front of key stakeholders such as compressor OEMs, associations and refrigerant gas manufacturers. This position requires a combination of people leadership and in-depth technical knowledge in lubricant formulation. The right candidate will have a history of proven success refreshing the innovation pipeline of a business unit and delivering complex research projects to meet unarticulated customer needs

 

Key responsibilities for the position entail:

 

  • Drive the technology platforms and projects, ensuring budget, timeline, staffing and goals are delivered
  • Provide strategic direction to the technology and product development programs for the Industrial Compressor, Refrigeration Compressor businesses
  • Being considered Chief Formulator or Chemist at CPI, deliver innovative solutions to meet articulated and unarticulated market needs,
  • Develop the organization by recruiting critical technical skills
  • Liaison with OEM customers and supply partners technical teams and CPI strategic marketing teams to deliver market winning products and strategic programs.
  • Participate in key external activities and industry technical symposiums and consortiums to promote CPI Fluid Engineering as a global technology leader and represent CPI strategies and needs to the industry.
  • Go to technical leader for  solving customer’s complex field/product development programs.
  • Being a member of Sr. Leadership team, provide routine research program proposal, plans and progress reports to Sr. Leadership.
  • Ensure the research facility is safe and compliant with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Identify and establish training needs for technical community.
  • Works in coordination with LZ Related groups to leverage Lubrizol’s capabilities
  • Drive a culture of high performance and accountability

 

The deliverables are:

 

  • Technology Roadmaps, New Product Development (NPD) pipeline.
  • New chemistry formulations, IP strategy and all strategic technical project charters hands-on technical leadership and gatekeeping.  
  • Review and interpret technical information and recommend future courses of action
  • Create opportunities and solutions to proactively address industry trends and competitor strategies.

 

KPIs:

  • % of IP protected sales
  • % of sales from new products (3 years)
  • NPV of NPD pipeline

Education/ Certification

 

  • PhD in chemistry or chemical engineering with minimum 10 years experience and proven track record of delivering new technology, procedures and patents.
  • Experience of leading a global technical team of engineers, researchers, chemists and formulators.
  • Experience managing research labs and assets.

 

Experience and Skills

 

  • Solid understanding of refrigeration technology and lubricants with direct experience at refrigeration OEMs Industrial lubricants or refrigerant gas makers considered a strong plus.
  • Experience formulating lubricants
  • Strong data analysis skills, ability to understand complex problems and provide creative solutions
  • Ability to manage/lead multiple R&D projects, deadlines and people.
  • Knowledge of commonly used software.
  • Ability to publish and track record of publications is a plus
  • Well-articulated skillfully presenter
