Role: Applied and Strategic Research Placement Student

At Lubrizol, we have a growing student community in the UK with over 30 placements each year across a number of roles.

Within the Applied and Strategic Research department, previously known as Applied Sciences, you will use your creativity and problem-solving skills to develop and test novel chemistries and new technologies. You will be part of a diverse and innovative team of skilled professionals which you will work with on a daily basis, as well as other students.

What you will be doing

You will be primarily involved in physical chemistry research and development relating to lubricants and fuels.  Students will gain an appreciation of the fundamental lubricant and fuel development process and an understanding of the chemical technologies making up high performance products. You will study how the different combinations of novel molecular types influence the performance of fuels and engine lubricants whilst reducing their environmental impact. There is a strong emphasis on understanding and enhancing the thermal, rheological and frictional performance of these fluids.

As a research physical chemist, you’ll be part of a diverse, innovative R&D group generating new ideas and applications impacting our business worldwide. You will work with experienced research scientists on innovative projects, using your creativity and problem solving skills to discover novel chemistries and new technologies for key businesses within Lubrizol such as Engine and Driveline Lubricants and Fuel Products. Due to our relatively short development cycle (typically 2 years from idea to market) you will also probably be involved in the performance evaluation of products you help develop. You will also be expected to interact with our commercial, analytical and synthesis departments in Hazelwood both in the UK and across the globe.

What you will need

  • Studying towards a Chemistry related degree including a year in industry, expecting a 2:1 or above
  • Achieved grade B or above in A Level Chemistry
  • Practical lab experience, working both in teams and individually
  • Candidates should have an interest in applied, physical, analytical chemistry or formulation science
  • Creative approach to problem-solving and a keen interest in the development of new technologies
