Applied and Strategic Research – Tribology Engineering 

Student Placement  


At Lubrizol, we have a growing student community in the UK with over 30 placements each year across several roles. Working within the Applied and Strategic Research department, this placement will require you to conduct laboratory research at the interface of engineering and materials science, designing, developing, and undertaking experiments that evaluate transportation and industrial lubricants, with a focus on tribological performance. 


Working closely with your independent supervisor and other R&D chemists and engineers, your research will contribute to Lubrizol’s short and long-term strategic project portfolios, driving for sustained reductions in emissions and improvements in efficiency across the transportation and industrial sectors. 


What you will be doing: 


  • Designing, developing, and undertaking experiments on a variety of friction and wear instruments to understand lubricant performance in engineered systems, by: 

  • Designing bespoke test methods and programs to differentiate lubricant performance 

  • Refining existing test methods for improved relevance and/or repeatability 

  • Implementing and undertaking practical experiments in line with the above points 

  • Using complementary research tools and techniques to support hypotheses 

  • Working with customers and collaborators to provide laboratory data in support of high-priority business requests 

  • Analysing data, interpreting findings, and making informed decisions on experimental progression 

  • Communicating findings and recommendations to support project advancement 

  • Supporting sitewide 3D printing activities, through CAD and hands-on activities 


In addition to the above, you will regularly attend a variety of discussions with colleagues and project stakeholders based in Hazelwood (UK) and Wickliffe Ohio (USA), where you will be required to provide project updates to a diverse range of individuals (including those with technical and commercial backgrounds). Presentations and formal written reports will be an important route for communicating your research, and appropriate training and mentorship will be provided throughout. As you develop in your placement, you will become a knowledgeable in your field of research and ultimately the ‘go to’ person for instruments in the laboratory and your research area.  

 What you will need: 

  • Studying towards a mechanical, automotive, or materials engineering degree (or similar) including a year in industry, achieving a 2:1 or above 

  • Interest in designing, developing, and undertaking laboratory experiments, including data analysis and recommendations on routes forward 

  • Ability to work independently and in a team, and effectively manage and prioritize your time 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a desire to engage with people across multiple departments 

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programmes, with experience in CAD software 


The ideal candidate. will have a keen interest in designing and undertaking tribology laboratory experiments to probe lubricant performance, working closely alongside R&D chemists to build understanding and propose hypotheses for performance.

Hazelwood is a small village in Derbyshire at the lower end of the Pennines, located around 8 miles from Derby city centre. Derby has extensive transport links with other areas of the country, the M1 motorway passes about 10 miles to the east of the city, linking Derby southwards to the London area and northwards to Sheffield and Leeds.
