Summary of Responsibilities             


  • Lead progress in EMEA to objectives for the Lubrizol Sustainability Organization (public affairs and corporate sustainability);
  • Represent Lubrizol in relations with the EU institutions;
  • Deliver economic value to Lubrizol by leveraging and developing relationships and identifying opportunities with European institutions and at Member State levels;
  • Actively support business unit sustainability and government affairs strategies in Europe;
  • Coordinate with operations, business unit technical, research, and marketing teams to instill sustainability as part of Lubrizol’s value proposition to customers in our innovation, products, supply chain and work practices in Europe;  
  • Grow local Government Affairs teams and manage supporting government affairs consultant teams.


Essential Job Functions  


Public Affairs - government relationships and advocacy (70%) 


  • Leverage existing and develop new relationships within the European Commission, European Parliament and Member States to create value for Lubrizol
  • Lead advocacy strategies to proactively address key legislative proposals, including aspects of the EU Green Deal, to create opportunity and manage risk for Lubrizol and its businesses.
  • Identify and elevate key issues to business leaders and support businesses in assessing advocacy options.
  • Lead development of Lubrizol position on key policy issues and align European advocacy to be consistent with policy positions.
  • Drive relationships with key European stakeholders and trade associations on advocacy activity that impacts Lubrizol and its businesses.


Corporate and business unit sustainability (30%)


  • Key member of corporate sustainability team in implementation of Lubrizol corporate sustainability mission in Europe, including driving toward corporate sustainability goals. 
  • Support Lubrizol business units to develop and implement sustainability as an aspect of proactive business strategy.
  • Participate in key European customer visits to communicate Lubrizol’s sustainability strategy and collaborate with customers to fulfill their sustainability objectives.
  • Identify opportunities for partnerships with customers/suppliers/others to develop sustainability projects.
  • Build strategic relationships with key stakeholders across internal businesses and support functions to influence strategic alignment on key sustainability objectives.


Skills, Qualifications, Experience Requirements:

  • Passion for advocacy and sustainability in concert with customer, consumer and business goals
  • Experience in or advocating to European institutions in relevant policy areas (with DG CLIMA, DG MOVE, DG GROW or DG ENV an advantage)
  • Familiarity with corporate sustainability strategy principles
  • Knowledge of chemistry and the specialty chemical business
  • Proficiency with the European Union executive and legislative structure and processes
  • Keen insight and excellent market knowledge with a focus on trends and regulations
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Collaborative team management and leadership skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills demonstrated in attention to details and organization to meet deadlines
  • Able to deal effectively with ambiguity, change and uncertainty
  • Comfortable with and able to influence senior leadership
  • Work effectively with multicultural team members to solve complex problems and implement solutions
  • Demonstrate influence with internal and external groups
  • Fluent in English. Fluent in other European languages an advantage.

Lubrizol is present in the Brussels area with twolocations and a total of about 100 employees: the Corporate office in Brussels city supports the business with services such as Finance, IT, Procurement, Customer Service, and HR. Louvain-la-Neuve, 25 km east of Brussels hosts an R&D facility of Lubrizol Advanced Materials LifeScience business, where dedicated teams work on innovative applications and provide technical services for our customers.
