Measurement Science provides the analytical expertise that Lubrizol Advanced Materials (LZAM) depends on to deliver the high-performance products, industry-leading technical support, and reliable quality that our customers value.  The team is an essential partner in LZAM’s success; we combine analytical chemistry expertise with product knowledge to deliver valuable solutions and insights to our customers.  Measurement Science supports the LZAM business units at every stage of the product lifecycle from new product development through commercialization, manufacturing, and technical service.


Summary of Responsibilities:

The Research Manager will lead and develop a diverse team of analytical scientists within Measurement Science in accordance with Lubrizol’s Cultural Beliefs (All In, Take Action, Lead Decisively, Be Courageous, Think External).  They will develop and maintain relationships with LZAM business units to ensure alignment with their priorities and objectives. They will assist with administration of the department including operational and capital budgeting and leadership of continuous improvement initiatives. They will do all of this while ensuring compliance with ethical, regulatory, safety, and environmental policies.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manages a diverse team of experienced analytical scientists while providing feedback, coaching, and guidance to facilitate their development.
  • Develops the capability and capacity of the team through talent management and recruitment.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with business units, seeking to understand their priorities and objectives.
  • Assists the team with prioritization of work based upon business unit priorities and objectives.
  • Seeks feedback from business units on department performance and opportunities for improvement.
  • Leads continuous improvement initiatives relating to priorities such as resource optimization, quality improvement, and data integrity.
  • Assists with planning and execution of operational expense budget (approximately $5 MM).
  • Assists with development and execution of a 5-year capital plan to ensure the alignment of department capabilities with future business needs.
  • Develops a detailed understanding of the systems critical to department operations (e.g. material management, test scheduling, data reporting, expense transfer).
  • Identifies and leverages industry best practices and external analytical capabilities.
  • Embeds compliance with ethical, regulatory, safety, and environmental policies within daily operations.
  • Leads in accordance with Lubrizol’s cultural beliefs; develops and empowers the team to do the same.
  • Drives department objectives to completion by fostering personal ownership of work.
  • Advances our inclusive culture that supports innovation and appropriate risk-taking


Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Special Physical Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field and 5 years of relevant industry experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including written and verbal communication, collaboration, influence, and the ability to engage and inspire others
  • Motivated self-starter with a focus on results
  • Experience with decision-making, planning, problem-solving and strategic thinking
  • Strong focus on customer service
  • Previous analytical chemistry experience is a plus
  • Previous management experience is a plus
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
