Lubrizol Life Science Health is a new and rapidly growing business segment within the Lubrizol Corporation, a Berkshire Hathaway company.  We are a total solutions provider for medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers.  It is our vision to become the preferred contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) for innovative medical devices and complex pharmaceuticals, providing differentiated polymers and excipients, state-of-the-art design and development, and manufacturing services to the healthcare industry.


Lubrizol Life Science Health is currently hiring an Applications Engineer / Scientist for our Medical Polymers R&D team.  To be successful, the candidate must be highly self-motivated, results oriented, collaborative, and creative in finding solutions to difficult challenges.  Our Medical Polymers business unit provides the medical device market with thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) which are regarded for their biocompatibility, strength, and processing versatility.  It will be the engineer’s responsibility to provide ongoing support of our portfolio of commercialized TPUs as well as enhance our understanding of the structure-processing-performance relationships in both existing and new TPUs.  The job will be located at our Center of Excellence for Medical Polymers, featuring a new state-of-the-art applications lab, in Brecksville, Ohio.   


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supports manufacturing plants in the ongoing maintenance of our broad portfolio of TPUs. 
  • Builds structure-processing-performance relationships models of our polymers, with emphasis on material/host interactions. 
  • Develops test methods that accurately measure performance characteristics of polymers, medical devices and medical device components.
  • Supports engineering efforts for both internal R&D projects as well as customer-driven contract development projects. 
  • Proactively maintains a safe working environment by ensuring conformance to company and industry safety rules and regulations.



Required Education, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, polymer science/engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, plastics engineering or related field & a combination of 0-8 years or relevant industry, academic or post-doctoral experience
  • Experience developing methods for measuring material / host interactions of biomaterials. 
  • Experience and expertise with polymer analytical methods, e.g. mechanical testing, melt flow index, GPC, DSC, DMA, FTIR.
  • Multidisciplinary approach to development of biomaterials.
  • Data-driven approach to research, including experience with design of experiments. 
  • Demonstrated ability to balance competing timelines and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of scientific rigor.
  • Results-driven attitude and a passion for learning.
  • Basic software skills including Microsoft Office and SharePoint.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills


Considered a plus:

  • Medical device experience including familiarity with ISO and ASTM standards for medical device testing and development.
  • CAD experience, e.g. SolidWorks.
  • Finite element analysis.
  • Experience with a broad range of biomaterials, including but not limited to, TPUs.
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence and machine learning.
