Engineering Manager



The Engineering Manager is accountable for managing the process, project, and process safety engineering functions at Lubrizol’s Bowling Green manufacturing facility. This role reports directly to the Senior Plant Manager and has a strong connection with the Process Technology group that supports the Bowling Green facility.  



  • Lead engineering organization to design equipment, technology and systems that meet the needs of the business while complying with all applicable engineering standards. 
  • Ensure processes/systems meet the requirements of Process Safety Management.
  • Cultivate a culture focused and acted to improvement of safety and operational excellence while ensuring responsible and disciplined operations at Bowling Green.



  • Ensure that the entire organization covers the vision of the Bowling Green plant and the corporation, setting clear expectations and ensuring goals are met.
  • Maintain a positive work environment/culture that fosters efficiency, effectiveness and high morale while ensuring that all employees are treated fairly and equitably
  • Hire, develop, promote, and retain engineers and other technical support personnel to meet the demand for services and to dispute high performing employees.
  • Develop and maintain systems to ensure all areas of the Bowling Green site adhere to the process and technology-focused elements of the OSHA 1910.119 process safety standard. These include the following elements: Process Safety Information, Process Hazard Analysis (LOPA), Pre-Start up Safety Review, Incident Investigation, Compliance Auditing
  • Lead Bowling Green engineering resources to ensure consistency and compliance to the above elements
  • Close collaboration with LZAM Central Engineering Department for projects that exceed $1,000,000.
  • Leverage both project engineering and maintenance resources to ensure reliability and sustainability of the physical assets and facilities at the Bowling Green site.
  • Manage Bowling Green Process Safety Management program to ensure full compliance to the PSM standard across covered processes.
  • Main point of contact between the Bowling Green facility, Process Technology, R&D and the LZAM Commercial teams to ensure Bowling Green has the equipment and process capability to support the growth objectives of the businesses. 
  • Manage new product introduction and work with Process Technology to ensure successful product scale-up or launches.
  • Collaborate with process technology group to ensure the successful transfer of new products and technologies.
  • Monitor and implement ideas to maximize overall asset utilization (OAU) and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Take ownership of all technical knowledge related to the Bowling Green surfactant manufacturing and ensure the knowledge is accessible and transferable.
  • Train, monitor, encourage and assist in the development of direct reports. 
  • Build succession plans for the engineers in the plant, including evaluation of co-ops, participation in recruiting, providing varied work experiences and training for development of technical personnel.
  • Domestic and international travel for training, meetings, customer visits and supplier visits may be required.
  • Ensure system is in place for process safety training of new engineers and operators


Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Special Requirements:

  • B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering with 5+ years process engineering experience in manufacturing
  • Knowledge of SAP enterprise software, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook. 
  • Application of statistical techniques and software for data analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Good organizational skills, verbal/written communication skills and attention to detail are a must.
  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong understanding of piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID’s)
  • Demonstrated results improving efficiency using TPM, Six Sigma, 5S, Lean, OEE or other CI techniques.
  • Experience with root cause analysis tools and risk assessments
  • Familiarity with quality ISO 9001


Considered a Plus:

  • Working knowledge of SAP (S4/HANA)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft share point or other file management systems
  • Experience with the design and start-up of a new process
  • Knowledge of ASME, NEC, NFPA, API engineering standards
  • Working knowledge of CAD
  • An advanced degree or MBA.
  • GMP experience.
  • Black Belt, Green Belt or Lean Manufacturing certification.

To our east is the Sandusky area featuring Cedar Point and Put-In-Bay.  Just south of Bowling Green is Findlay, Ohio where one can visit an annual Hot Air Balloon festival and is home to University of Findlay.  Interspersed between these areas are many annual festivals, Metro Parks, bike trails and of course the Maumee River and Lake Erie to enjoy. There are attractions in and around Bowling Green to fit everyone’s liking!
