Role: Student Placement Scientist in Paper & Textiles Applications

At Lubrizol, we have a growing student community in the UK with over 30 placements each year across a number of roles. On placement at our Blackley, Manchester Centre of excellence, you will be working within our Advanced Materials, Performance Coatings division. Textile and paper coating solutions from Lubrizol are designed to help ordinary fabrics do extraordinary things - allowing them to become high-performance textiles. Our advanced fabric coating technologies - including resins, polymers, additives and formulated solutions - can all work together to significantly enhance textile performance.

 

What you will be doing

Working within the Textiles and Paper Team, you will have the opportunity to gain experience working within the area of formulation and polymer chemistry.

  • You will be given the opportunity to explore and broaden our technical understanding within Performance Coatings, helping the Paper and Textiles team to respond to the needs of our customers
  • You will be given a project to look more closely at current and new novel NHFR technology for Paper, Textiles and Non-woven materials
  • You will be making valuable contributions towards a Type A technical service project throughout the year

 

What you will need

  • Studying towards a chemistry related degree involving a year in industry, achieving a 2:1 or above
  • Ability to work independently and in support of supervisor
  • Knowledge and experience with safe laboratory practices and sound scientific methodology
  • Ability to formulate and communicate conclusions and outcomes of projects and experiments
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software, including word, excel, PowerPoint

Located three miles north of Manchester City Centre, Blackley is home to some of the most popular green spaces in the area including Heaton Park (the biggest park in Greater Manchester, and one of the largest municipal parks in Western Europe), Blackley Forest and Boggart Hole Clough.   Reflecting its history as a textile manufacturing hub, the Manchester area was once known as “Cotttonopolis.” The Manchester Ship Canal, built in 1894, enabled oceangoing ships to sail right into the Port of Manchester. Today, Manchester's museums celebrate its rich industrial heritage and its role in the Industrial Revolution, the textile industry, the Trade Union movement, women's suffrage and football (Manchester United and Manchester City).
