Operating under the general guidance of the Director of DEDD, the Associate Scientist leads formulation efforts in the development of drug eluting devices withing the Bethlehem facility. The Associate Scientist has responsibility for executing product development, from inception to manufacturing of internal and client-based products.

 

Education: 

Bachelor of Science in a related discipline or previous relevant experience in drug product formulation and characterization

 

Experience: 

0 – 3 years related experience in the pharmaceutical industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience working under current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Lead all facets of product development, from inception to manufacturing.
  • Execute internal and client projects from conceptualization, formulation development, Scale-up through production of pre-clinical and clinical trial materials and technology transfer to client companies.
  • Interface with Analytical Services for testing of raw materials, manufactured formulations, drug substances and drug product stability.
  • Anticipate, recognize, and resolve or escalate technical issues through use of resources including technical literature, collaboration with technical experts and well formulated, logical experimentations.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment as an instrument owner, where appropriate.
  • Evaluate and interpret data and communicate results to management and functional teams.
  • Maintain good documentation practices in laboratory notebooks, batch records and other in-house reporting formats in a highly regulated cGMP environment
     

Skills, Experience, & Qualifications:

  • 0 – 3 years of related experience in pharmaceutical industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Practical knowledge of fabricating polymeric devices, including hot melt extrusion and injection molding of thermoplastics and thermoset polymers preferred.
  • Critical to the job is the ability to disassemble, clean and re-assemble larger equipment used in various manufacturing processes
  • Physiochemical understanding of formulation components and interactions, and experience in physical characterization techniques preferred.
  • Experience drafting technical reports, and developing SOPs, and other regulatory documentation preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of cGMPs, GLP, and FDA/ICH guidelines and their application to drug product development preferred.
  • Comfortable working within a regulated environment following cGMP and SOP protocols.
  • Good interpersonal skills; displays professionalism
  • Ability to work in a team environment, but also work independently; honest and trustworthy
  • High energy, adaptive learner, positive attitude

 

Working Conditions: 

  • Expected to wear all required PPE
  • Work may occur around chemicals, nuisance odors, and noise from operating areas
  • May require standing for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift/carry/move up to 10 pounds, with occasional upper limits of up to 50 pounds
  • Safely work independently and around others by following all required procedures
  • Good mechanical aptitude with the ability to disassemble and assemble process equipment
  • Strong technical and analytical skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Good written communication skills
  • Excellent knowledge and skills of MS Office applications, especially Word and Excel
