Role: 

Candidate will provide process engineering support to investigate and implement process improvements for the Coatings area at the Avon Lake plant (buildings B437 and B461).   This includes the following processes: Polyurethane Dispersions, Hyperdispersants, Acrylic Dispersions and dried extruder resins.  The position reports directly to the Process Supervisor in one of two operating departments.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Overall efforts are directed towards continually improving the production process in the areas of product quality, operating costs, efficiency and HS&E. 
  • Ensure safe operations by observing all Health, Safety and Environmental (HS&E) procedures.
  • Understand the general concepts of ISO 9001 and cosmetic ingredient GMP.
  • Provide process troubleshooting and technical directions to manufacturing department – may involve interaction outside normal business hours as department runs 24/7.
  • Modify or create new batch charge sheets, operating procedures and DCS programs to implement changes or to introduce new products. 
  • Closely monitor all production batches of new products, while those products are still in the scale-up process.
  • Monitor and implement ideas to maximize reactor utilization, batch cycle time and equipment reliability. 
  • Work with project engineers to identify, provide justification and start-up support for capital projects.
  • Support the Process Safety Management program, including the MOC process, PHA participation and follow-up, maintenance of Operating Procedures, operator training and certification, and development of Process Safety Information.
  • Provide technical guidance to maintain/improve all HS&E initiatives for the department.
  • Use and maintain systems associated with ISO9001 quality standards.
  • Work with chemical operators to learn the process and how it is performed and to solicit new ideas for improvement.
  • Become familiar with the operating equipment and be able to troubleshoot problems to improve equipment performance.
  • Limited travel for training/meetings and customer/supplier visits may be required.

 

Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Special Requirements:

  • B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of two years of related process engineering or operations experience.
  • Demonstrated process engineering skills, with an emphasis on troubleshooting and process improvement.
  • Familiar with unit operations and able to learn and understand intricacies of specific chemical processes.

Considered a Plus

  • Programming experience with Delta V DCS.
  • Knowledge of and experience with SAP.
  • Experience with ISO9001 and cGMP quality standards.
  • Formal training and/or experience in Continuous Improvement (Six Sigma) and Lean methods.
  • Experience with project engineering, construction processes, and project management.
